I can't see what all the fuss is about with this "ethical dilemma" business. The music industry fought hard against the sale of used CDs citing the same arguments. Apparently the gaming and music industry want to ignore property rights, and force us legally into people who permanently borrow their products, and use them at the industry's whims. No thank you.

But all that aside, the gaming industry should take a lesson from the music industry. CDs were expensive. Used CDs were cheaper, so people bought them. MP3s were cheaper still (ie illegally free) and easy to acquire. So that's what we did. I don't know if used CDs are still a thriving market, I haven't bought one in ages. I buy almost all my music through iTunes or Amazon, because the cost seems reasonable and the convenience is high. The cost of games is rather high new. So I don't buy them, with rare exception. I surely won't be buying digital downloads of a game that I can't turn around and trade or sell. But, even if I do buy used, I generate money for the producers by buying downloadable content frequently. It's the happy medium for me.

I'm all for companies offering incentives to buy new, or pre-order somewhere. (Now with new DLC for pre-orders there is finally a reason to do so. For over a decade its sole purpose has been to do inventory management for GameStop so they don't have to think.) The bigger incentive would be to get the costs down so used games aren't so attractive. Getting more restrictive with DRM or downloadable content will hurt them in the long run by forcing more people away from gaming or inspiring more people to look toward piracy.

Forget the ethics of the thing, it's all about market forces.

This is a great post. I really agree on a lot of the points. I think you were really fair to GW while still pointing out some great ideas.

Thanks for the post.
